Interview with Head Injuries

This pop-punk band from Colorado started in October 2011, releasing their "Boogie Nights EP". Since then they've been touring the US and releasing music whenever possible. Their latest album 'Bail' is a throwback to the classic pop-punk sound, bringing to mind artists like Blink-182, Green Day and New Found Glory. I stumbled across their music after they were featured as one of four unsigned bands to hear in Alternative Press and I loved them from the first few seconds of the first song I heard. They took time out of their busy tour schedule to answer some questions.

How did you guys meet? Were you friends before?
Jared: Zack and I met in 6th grade and had a mutual love for punk rock and have been playing together ever since.
We met Nate when we we’re about 15 and played shows with his band back then and always knew he was an amazing drummer. Coty just showed up, not sure where the hell he came from.

What inspired you to become musicians?
Music is one of the single most important things in life. It changes the world and makes people belong. Punk rock is the one thing that made us all come together, and that’s rad. Plus, I heard it can help you get chicks…I suppose we’ll see about that one.

Was that what you always wanted to do?
It has been our goal since we we’re kids recording on a 4 track tape player, in our parent’s basement to play music and we’re not going to slow down.

I think the ‘Bail’ album is a return to the ‘classic’ punk-rock sound, was this a conscious decision?
We play the music we want to hear, and the music we love. We grew up on classic pop-punk and punk rock and never really grew out of it.

What song would you recommend to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
Most likely ‘Fake’ from our latest album ‘Bail’. I think it sums us up as a band and where we are taking our sound.

What artists influence you as a band? Who do you admire?
Honestly, anything from Black Flag, Blink-182, Notorious BIG, to Taylor Swift.

Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with?
Iggy Pop or Rebecca Black.

My Mum insists that in every interview I ask; what apps do you have on your phone and which one is your favourite?
Probably Instagram.

Can we expect to see you in the UK anytime soon?
Absolutely, we will be out there as soon as possible! Thanks to people like you the word is getting out.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Pretty standard, warming up, getting to know everyone, and a secret chant in a forgotten Latin language in black robes.

Are you working on new stuff or focussing solely on the tour?
We are always working on new songs and looking towards Head Injuries future. Expect to hear things sooner than later.

What would you like to achieve through your music?
Sharing our stories and hopefully people will listen and relate. We want to tour as much as possible and make people have a great time and feel better about whatever’s going on in their lives.

If you’re buying music, how would you do so: CD, vinyl or digital?
All of the above, but a lot of vinyl for sure.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Play the music you love, don’t let anyone change your mind and get out there and do it.

If you're a fan of the classic pop-punk, punk-rock sound then you need to give these guys a listen. Their album 'Bail' is absolutely brilliant and is one I highly recommend. Their sound is a throwback to the classic pop-punk, bringing to mind artists like Blink-182, Green Day and New Found Glory. If you live in the US see if you can catch them at a live show as they're currently on tour. And if you don't live in the US then just continue showing support, buy their latest album 'Bail' and check out some of their older stuff too.
