BADLANDS - Halsey

American singer/songwriter Halsey has made quite the impact since the release of her EP 'Room 93' in 2014. She toured with The Kooks in 2014 and supported Imagine Dragons on their recent Smoke and Mirrors tour. Her debut album 'Badlands' did not disappoint on its worldwide release late August.

The name 'Badlands' is a reference to Halsey's state of mind while writing the album, to give a physical place as a metaphor for a desolate and lonely mind. Halsey has referred to this album as a "angry female record", I think a lot of the songs are definitely easy for girls to relate to but that doesn't mean it's just for girls. Her sound certainly stands out to me, she owns her individual style. There are moments she reminds me of Ellie Goulding, but that hypnotic haunting voice is similar to that of Lana Del Rey.

The first song on the album 'Castle' draws you in immediately and introduces you to the hypnotic voice of Halsey. It gives a perfect taste of what's to come, and if you aren't hooked here then I don't know if you will be.

'New Americana' was her highest charting single, reaching 22 on the U.S Alternative chart. Honestly, I'm surprised her other singles weren't as successful and that this song only reached 22nd. It's one of those songs that makes you want to sing along and is something that many listeners can relate to. As with all the songs on this album, you are captivated by Halsey's voice, beautiful melodies, strong beats and perfect lyrics.

With the strong electronic presence in songs like 'Haunting' I can only imagine what her live performance would be like. From what I've heard she's just as brilliant live as she is on her record. 'Hold me Down' is another brilliant song, below is a live performance of the song; showcasing her amazing live voice.

Halsey is bound to big, not only has she received a brilliant response from her fans but also from other musicians - like Josh Dun from twenty one pilots and all the guys from Imagine Dragons. She definitely fits with that crowd and for people who like that style of music I can promise you you'll enjoy 'Badlands'. Go get the album, you won't be disappointed.
